Lung Volumes and Capacities in Respiratory Diseases

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Introduction The basic 4 volumes do not overlap each other: tidal volume, inspiratory and expiratory reserve volumes and residual volume. On the other hand, lung capacities include two or more volumes: inspiratory capacity, vital capacity, functional residual capacity and total lung capacity. Spirographic examination of lung functions is characterized by the following main changes: in the obstructive type of disease the functional residual capacity increases and the rate of expiration slows down, which shows on the value of one second forced vital capacity (FEV1) and on the flow-volume loop. In diseases of the restrictive type vital capacity is reduced.

The physiological basis and clinical significance of lung volume measurements

From a physiological standpoint, the lung volumes are either dynamic or static. Both subclasses are measured at different degrees of inspiration or expiration; however, dynamic lung volumes are characteristically dependent on the rate of air flow. The static lung volumes/capacities are further subdivided into four standard volumes (tidal, inspiratory reserve, expiratory reserve, and residual vo...

Pulmonary function in ulcerative colitis

Abstract Background: Pulmonary involvement in ulcerative colitis (UC) is thought to be rare. There is not a definite document about the question that "Is the lung a target organ in inflammatory bowel disease?" The aim of the present study is to compare lung function between cases with UC and healthy controls. This study will also be of interest about searching the outbreak of pulmonary functio...

Reference Equations for Static Lung Volumes and TLCO from a Population Sample in Northern Greece.

Background: The most commonly used reference equations for the measurement of static lung volumes/capacities and transfer factor of the lung for CO (TLCO) are based on studies around 30-40 years old with significant limitations. Objectives: Our aim was to (1) develop reference equations for static lung volumes and TLCO using the current American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society gui...

Shrinking lung syndrome as a manifestation of pleuritis: a new model based on pulmonary physiological studies.

OBJECTIVE The pathophysiology of shrinking lung syndrome (SLS) is poorly understood. We sought to define the structural basis for this condition through the study of pulmonary mechanics in affected patients. METHODS Since 2007, most patients evaluated for SLS at our institutions have undergone standardized respiratory testing including esophageal manometry. We analyzed these studies to define...

Short-duration transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND Respiratory muscle strength has been related to the postoperative outcome of cardiac surgeries. The main documented therapeutic purpose of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is the reduction of pain, which could bring secondary benefits to the respiratory muscles and, consequently, to lung capacities and volumes. OBJECTIVES The objective of the present study was to ...
